What's it like to work at Callison? Our people apply their talents in a variety of positions, from retail store planning and design to marketing and information technology. In their own words, they tell what they like best about working at Callison.
"I work with our financial clients assisting with drawings, code research and some construction administration in the fast-paced design process. My studio gives me the opportunity to gain experience at a fast pace and to build my IDP credits to eventually become licensed. I'm constantly presented with opportunities to participate in projects and tasks I might not be able to do working somewhere else.
At Callison you have the benefits of a large firm with the studio mentality of a smaller firm. They're constantly finding ways to improve the company and take care of us, as employees.
There are always activities to participate in – vendor presentations, yoga classes, continuing education for AIA credit, Callison Lecture Series, softball, kickball etc. This office provides me with the greatest amount of resources (both in terms of people and information) as well as one of the best views in the city!"
"I work directly with our clients to oversee the implementation of stores across the country from the early stages of pre-design, performing surveys and working on store layouts. As an interior designer, my job provides the opportunity to work directly with clients, general contractors and consultants. Our team is not just Callison, but a whole group of individuals performing various roles.
My managers work hard to give everyone opportunities to grow and develop as professionals. I've been encouraged to participate in leadership activities such as the Sustainable Leadership Committee so I'm able to work on long-term goals for the firm.
I work in Seattle and can't imagine living and working anyplace else! This city is both urban and natural. There are cultural opportunities every day and mountains and water in every direction."
"I'm the Administrative Assistant for a studio that currently consists of more than 80 people. Good people skills are important when supporting a group this large and you have to easily adapt to a variety of tasks – I’m constantly looking for new and better ways to problem solve.
I like the challenge here and learning new things. I also like the interaction with different people. From Principal to Administrative Assistant, each person here is a key factor in the success of a project. It's the true sense of the words 'collaborative effort.'"
"I work closely with clients and consultants to develop overall project design from initial concept through project development, ensuring design quality through documentation and construction. I make sure the creative solution exceeds client's goals and expectations.
I like that my job allows me to travel and explore different regions and cultures both domestically and abroad. I meet new clients and appreciate the work required to gain their trust. There are so many people here with different backgrounds, cultures and knowledge. It's great to work with people who can draw on their own experience and industry knowledge to tackle different design problems. We're collaborative; there are no big egos."
"My job requires me to be flexible because of the different responsibilities I tackle. I'm involved in most every aspect of our projects from bidding and project development to design and client relations. This definitely keeps the days moving fast.
I learn something new on a daily basis. The possibility to expand your knowledge and then be able to apply it appropriately plays a vital part in making each day a gratifying experience.
I'm proud to be part of our Mexico City team. The atmosphere is unique, it is very professional and focused, yet relaxed enough that our staff is united and friendly. The opportunity to collaborate internationally and the potential of the Mexican market are exciting. It's a pleasure to work here."
"As Manager of Operations for our Shanghai office, I'm working to establish Callison's global strategy in China. I collaborate with multiple teams and studios at both the Shanghai and Seattle offices and I work with many of our long-term clients on projects in Asia.
Our firm is very creative and resourceful – the people I work with are experts in their field. And, because our office is still growing, I get the opportunity to work with new talent.
We just completed our design of Hongyi Plaza, the home of our new office. As a key team member, it's a great feeling to work in a space that I helped design"
"As a member of Callison's Graphic Design Group, I create spaces that communicate a client's brand. We accomplish this by integrating the client's vision and the design essence of architecture into two and three-dimensional graphics – logos, sculptural elements and more. My work ensures the user has a clear, succinct and intuitive experience in the space.
The greatest thing about my team is our collaboration with our other in-house design disciplines. Our input is valued in the initial stages of a project's design. Callison is a deep pool of design talent and experience - the opportunity to work with established design professionals keeps me sharp while the mentoring of new talent keeps my mind fresh. And Cal U keeps my work relevant."
"I plan for new technology as it relates to our business and assist in support where it's needed. The technology I bring in not only assists in architecture and design but it also helps in the communication and collaboration between staff and clients around the world. It gives our design process a competitive edge.
Our IT team is always able to work on the latest technology because Callison chooses to stay on the cutting edge. But it's not just the technology. The team environment is very inviting. There are a lot of times when I’m able to grab a group of people into a shared space and collaborate – everyone is open and willing to listen and share ideas.
There's never a dull moment here, but if I need a break, I can step outside. The downtown environment allows you to break away with ease."
"I have a number of responsibilities across different projects from working with the CADD team to assisting in the development of the design. I do computer modeling and rendering, creation of overview graphic documents and even space plans. Such a variety of responsibilities keeps it interesting and fun.
The people I work with definitely play an important part in why I enjoy working here. They're great to work with, understanding and encouraging. It's rewarding to see your work being used by clients – the range of large clients makes this a prestigious job.
The work atmosphere is key to such a good experience. I feel very welcome and part of the team. As an intern, if you mess up (which I have) the feedback is encouraging, and your team pushes you to try it again until you get it right."
