LEEDing Neighborhood Design

USGBC selects Callison-designed projects for Neighborhood Development Pilot Program

July 06, 2007 - Callison-designed mixed-use developments City Creek Center in Salt Lake City, UT and Ever Vail in Vail, CO have been selected by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for inclusion in the LEED for Neighborhood Development Pilot Program.

As participants in the pilot program, Callison’s projects help to define and quantify expectations for future neighborhood developments by integrating the underlying principles of smart growth, new urbanism and green building.

Revitalizing a Downtown
Upon completion in 2011, City Creek Center will span two city blocks in downtown Salt Lake City across from Temple Square and will integrate retail, residences, high-rise office towers and an existing hotel to provide the Salt Lake City community with a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood at its core. With nationally-recognized retail anchors Nordstrom, Macy’s and Dillard’s, along with specialty retail stores, the 820,000 square feet of retail and six acres of open landscaped space with water features will create a pedestrian-friendly urban environment. An 800-foot long pedestrian concourse with a retractable roof will reduce energy consumption, allow for natural ventilation and encourage community interaction.

LEEDing Resort
Ever Vail, a one-million-square-foot, mixed-use development in Vail, Colorado will be a choice destination for those seeking environmentally-friendly resorts and communities. The resort will consist of retail, hotel, residential, office, restaurants as well as mountain operations facilities and a public parking garage. Callison’s design creates an opportunity to restore two creeks located on the property and to redevelop a brownfield site currently occupied by Vail’s vehicle maintenance shop and gas station.

With its completion in 2011, Ever Vail will be the largest LEED-certified project for resort use in the United States.
